Outer Hebrides (Scotland)

The Outer Hebrides, or Western Isles, are strung out in a curve beyond the western coast of Scotland and the Inner Hebrides. Lewis and Harris are the best-known to foreigners, the latter having given its name to Harris Tweed.

The biggest town in the islands is Stornoway, on Lewis, with a population of 8,400. It used to be primarily a fishing and weaving town, but today it also caters to the North Sea offshore oil industry.

Visit Hebrides
The official guide to the Western Isles has a little of everything, including detailed descriptions (with photos) of the islands.

Caledonian MacBrayne
Calmac provides services to 22 localities and four peninsulas in western Scotland.

Shetlands (Scotland)

The Shetland Islands loom tall and dark in the North Atlantic and they lie closer to Scandinavia than to Scotland. In fact, they were part of Scandinavia for 700 years and are linked with Denmark, Norway, the Faroes, and Iceland by weekly ferries during the summer. Lerwick is the capital, and from there you can tour the Shetland "mainland" and many of the other islands by rental car and local ferries.

Shetland Islands Tourism
The official tourist site of the Shetland has everything you need to plan your trip.

Northlink Ferries
Car/passenger ferries provide overnight service between Aberdeen, Scotland and Lerwick, Shetlands.

Smyril Line
The M/F Norröna connects Tórshavn, capital of the Faroe Islands, with Denmark, Norway, the Shetlands, and Iceland.

Shetland Islands Council - Inter-Island Ferry Service
See the List of Services page to view timetables for the council's nine ferry routes, booking numbers, and an interactive route map.
