- 2010 Update: Peter Deilmann left
its main business, river cruising, in 2009. At the time,
the company said that it would continue to operate the ocean vessel Deutschland,
but its U.S. and British Web sites were no longer functioning the last time
we checked, so it would appear that the company is now focusing on its core
German-speaking audience.
Peter Deilmann Cruises
operates a single oceangoing cruise ship, MS
Deutschland, which recreates the atmosphere of classic transatlantic liners
with its Edwardian "Grand Hotel" decor. The ship carries 513 passengers in
staterooms that range from inside single cabins to a pair of veranda suites.
Most
of the MS Deutschland's passengers are German, but in the past, the
line has
marketed some cruises to English-speaking travelers, and
it offers a chance for guests from overseas to mingle with Europeans while
cruising in Europe.
Trivia note: Since 1999, the Deutschland has played a
starring role in Das
Traumschiff, a long-running German TV series that might be described as
an upmarket version of The Love Boat. (For a while, the series logo was
even painted on the ship's stack.)
