Peter Deilmann Cruises has a long tradition of river cruising, but since 1998 it has also operated a luxury oceangoing cruise ship, the MS Deutschland, which recreates the atmosphere of classic transatlantic liners with its Edwardian "Grand Hotel" decor. The ship carries 513 passengers in staterooms that range from inside single cabins to a pair of veranda suites.

Most of the MS Deutschland's passengers are German, but the line does actively market to English-speaking travelers (particularly in the U.S. and the UK), and it offers a chance for guests from overseas to mingle with Europeans while cruising in Europe.

In 2008, the Deutschland's European cruising season begins with a repositioning voyage from Dubai to Istanbul on April 1. After working its way up through the Mediterranean and Western Europe to the Norwegian fjords, the ship will visit the British Isles, the Baltic, and the Black Sea. It will head back to Dubai in mid-November on its way to the Maldives and Africa.

Trivia note: Since 1999, the Deutschland has played a starring role in Das Traumschiff, a long-running German TV series that might be described as an upmarket version of The Love Boat. (For a while, the series logo was even painted on the ship's stack.)
