I had joined an informal walking tour led by Stephane, one of
the guides from the Nordstjernen. He drew our attention to an aerial
cable lift on the mountain behind Ny-ålesund and to the small building on
top.The building was
Koldewey
Station, one of several research facilities operated jointly by Germany's
Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) and the French Polar Institute Paul Emil Victor
(IPEV) as the French-German Arctic Research
Base.
