Les Baux de Provence, France
from MS Maribelle Photos

Les Baux de Provence

Yves Brayer's frescoes cover the walls of the White Penitents' Chapel, which was restored in 1936 and decorated by M. Brayer in 1974.

The chapel was built in 1650, when guilds of "penitents" marched in processions, sang at church, buried the dead, and performed other services for the church. Members of the guilds wore hooded robes of different colors--among them, the blanc worn by the White Penitents.
