Roman aqueduct
To grasp the scale of the Pont du Gard, look for the people on
the bridge behind the second row of arches. (The bridge was constructed next to
the Roman aqueduct in the 18th Century.)
The stone protrusions on the aqueduct's face were used to hold
scaffolding for Roman craftsmen and slaves. Every stone was cut to a plan and
hauled to the site over a great distance, where it was then lifted into place
with the help of a block and tackle.
