Bay of Izmir

Izmir, Turkey

On Tuesday morning (day 4 of our MSC Eastern Mediterranean cruise), MSC Poesia arrived in the Bay of Izmir. It was a brilliantly sunny day, and the suburbs on the surrounding hills were blanketed by an ultraviolet haze.

Izmir--known as Smyrna or Smirne in the Hellenic era--is a mostly modern city these days, although its Agora ruins (which we'll show later in this photo gallery) are well worth visiting. Izmir is the third-largest population center in Turkey, with 2.6 million city residents and nearly 3.8 million in the metropolitan area.
