After our shopping excursion, we walked from downtown to the Akershus
Slott og Festning, a.k.a. the Akershus Castle and Fortress, which
overlooked the cruise terminal and our ship.
The complex of stone buildings and
walls was begun toward the end of the 13th Century, and it defended Oslo
successfully against foreign invaders until the Germans arrived in 1940. Part of
the fortress is still used by the Norwegian defense ministry.
