ABOVE: A vintage Mac Tour bus. Mac TourMac Tours, which were introduced in 2005, use vintage doubledecker buses to explore the "hidden delights"of Edinburgh that other itineraries miss. From Waverley Bridge, the "hop on, hop off" tour bus heads north through the New Town to Stockbridge, a former milling community that has become a trendy residential area. (Take time to wander along the Water of Leith, an attractive riverside path that offers views of woods, weirs, and back gardens.) The bus then continues south to Dean Village, near the Dean Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art, before passing St. Mary's Cathedral and Edinburgh Castle, cutting through the Grassmarket, and crossing the George IV Bridge to the Museum of Scotland and on to Nicholson Square, just around the corner from the Surgeons' Hall Museum. It then crosses the center of the Royal Mile on its way back to Waverley Bridge. The Mac Tour is a good choice if you've already seen the main tourist sights and want to try something different.
