Scott Monument

As
you climb the Scott Monument, you'll reach a room with exhibits from the life
and works of Sir Walter Scott.
The room is decorated with elaborate woodcarvings and stained-glass windows.
Scott
was important not merely as a poet and novelist, but also for his role in
promoting a Scottish national identity through such romantic inventions as clan
tartans. He earned his chops as a Scottish patriot by leading a successful
search for Scotland's Honours (a.k.a. the Scottish crown jewels), which were
found in a locked chest at Edinburgh Castle after being forgotten for more than
a hundred years.
