Hotel spotlight:
Casa de São Gonçalo da Lagos
The Casa de São Gonçalo da Lagos is a haven for travelers who enjoy a quiet,
comfortable bed-and-breakfast atmosphere. The hotel is located on a street in the heart of
Lagos, and it doesn't look like much on the outside: a pink stucco façade with a door and
several windows.
Step
inside, however, and you'll find yourself in a renovated 18th-Century mansion with
attractively furnished public rooms and an outdoor courtyard where you can eat breakfast
or simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Upstairs, there's a cozy sitting room for
relaxing, card-playing, or reading.
Each of the hotel's 13 rooms is distinctive. The furniture consists mostly of antiques,
with the doilies and embroidered cloths that you might expect to find in a Portuguese
country house. And instead of being lined up along a hall, as in most hotels, the São
Gonçalo's rooms are arranged in small clusters (some reached by their own tiled
staircases).
Unfortunately, the Casa de São Gonçalo da Lagos closes from November through March.
But if you enjoy quality B&B accommodations and are visiting Lagos outside the winter
season, it's well worth phoning, faxing, or writing in advance for reservations.
(Rates were € 40-75 per day the last time I checked, and credit cards are accepted.)
