Lace
Belgium has a long tradition of lacemaking, and Trabel.com's
History of Lace
article has examples of traditional and present-day lacemaking techniques. If
you want to buy lace, reader James Howard has nice things to say about
Rubbrecht. He writes:
"They produce their laces themselves. They can provide an enormous variety of
lace, and they also have a very nice collection of antique laces you can buy.
But the nicest thing in this store is that people take time to explain you some
of the history of the lace in Belgium if you ask. They search in their boxes and drawers to find the small piece you
need to bring home."
The Maison Rubbrecht is at 23 Grand-Place, 1000 Brussels, telephone + 32 25
12 02 18. (Rubbrecht didn't yet have a Web site the last time I checked, but the
store has been in business for years and has an excellent reputation.)
