Kyle Phillips, About's Italian Cuisine Guide, introduced me to this restaurant and wine shop near the Bargello sculpture museum. The split-level room is divided into two sections: a pleasant dining area with wonderful semi-abstract architectural photos on the walls and tables for small and large groups, and a wine area (up the steps and to your left) where you'll find a vast array of Tuscan wines displayed on open shelves.

The menu is designed to complement the wines, which are the stars of the show. Kyle and I had a platter of Tuscan cold cuts (salame, cheeses, ham, pork shoulder, cured lard, and cold vegetables) with a bottle of red wine that received Kyle's blessing after he'd given it the requisite swirling, sniffing, and slurping.

For dessert, we had sweet Vinsanto wine (read a description at See Tuscany) accompanied by biscottini di Prato cookies that we dipped in the vino.

Prices were L19,000 each for the cold platters, L27,000 for the red wine, L2000 for a bottle of mineral water, and L8000 per person for dessert. The total bill for two was 83,000 lire or EUR 42.87.

Verdict: A great place for oenophiles who'd like to sample Tuscan wines while lunching or dining on local specialties. (The Enoteca also offers wine tastings, cooking classes, winery excursions, and even Tuscan weddings in the city or countryside.)
