Iceland Blue Lagoon Reykjanes Peninsula travel tour

Excursions

The citizens of Reykjavík take great pride in their cultural life, shopping, and other civilized pleasures. But let's face it: If you wanted to attend a concert or shop, you could do it just as easily in New York, London, Minneapolis, or Manchester.

An exotic landscape is Iceland's great draw--that, and the opportunity to see the Northern Lights or a volcanic eruption if Nature is in a cooperative mood. Fortunately, Icelandair and its travel partners offer sightseeing add-ons and all-inclusive packages that range from local excursions to multi-day bus tours and adventure treks. Here are just a few examples:

Lava Horseback Ride. Seat yourself on a "the gentle Icelandic Horse" for a two- to three-hour guided ride through volcanic landscapes.

Blue Lagoon and Leykjanes Peninsula: A daily six-hour tour from Reykjavík includes the lunar landscape of Reykjanes, the official estate of Iceland's president, and a soak in the  Blue Lagoon (a naturally heated mineral-water oasis surrounded by a lava field).

Westman Islands: Take a 25-minute flight to a chain of islands where you can see houses that were destroyed by a 1973 eruption of lava that still warms the ground beneath your feet.

A Winter Night's Adventure: Head for the hills in a "Super Truck," drink cocktails underground in a lava tube, and--if you're lucky--see the Aurora Borealis during the late fall and winter months.

South Shore Treasures: See waterfalls, geysers, multicolored hot springs, Viking ruins, and the Solheim Glacier during a five-night tour by van or bus. (Late March to early October).

Highland Snowmobile Trek: A five-day/four-night wilderness excursion into the center of Iceland, with seven or eight hours of snowmobiling per day. (Mid-February to late April.)
