ABOVE: Fishing boats in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. Outer Hebrides (Scotland)The Outer Hebrides, or Western Isles, are strung out in a curve beyond the western coast of Scotland and the Inner Hebrides. Lewis and Harris are the best-known to foreigners, the latter having given its name to Harris Tweed. The biggest town in the islands is Stornoway, on Lewis, with a population of 8,400. It used to be primarily a fishing and weaving town, but today it also caters to the North Sea offshore oil industry. Visit Hebrides Caledonian MacBrayne Shetlands (Scotland)The Shetland Islands loom tall and dark in the North Atlantic and they lie closer to Scandinavia than to Scotland. In fact, they were part of Scandinavia for 700 years and are linked with Denmark, Norway, the Faroes, and Iceland by weekly ferries during the summer. Lerwick is the capital, and from there you can tour the Shetland "mainland" and many of the other islands by rental car and local ferries.
