La Charterie

A B&B in Saint Aubin de Scellon, Normandy, France

Two readers from Canada, Pam and Graham L., asked me to tell you about La Charterie, a bed-and-breakfast in Normandy:

We recently returned from a two week trip to France.

I had chosen 'Les Aubépines aux Chauffourniers' as a first stop. Unfortunately Mme et M. Maze said that they were fully booked. When I asked them for a recommendation of a nearby bed and breakfast they suggested "La Charterie" at Saint Aubin de Scellon".

I telephoned and was warmly greeted by Marie-Hélène Francois. She operates this auberge with Hughes de Morchoven.

They were able to accommodate us and our friends, another Canadian couple.

This turned out to be an absolutely outstanding place.  Set in the country only 4 kilometers north of the N13  this elegant French manor was a welcoming sight.

Our rooms were spotless , very large and impeccably decorated in the most beautiful French country motif....toile wallpaper, co-ordinated drapes and bedding, modern ensuite bathrooms with every accessory one would want.

Downstairs in the dining room we were treated to an outstanding full course dinner. Breakfasts included several delicious country breads, yogurt with four homemade preserves, large cups of steaming coffee and served on a beautifully set table with colourful country linens.

Marie was the quintessential hostess making us feel immediately at home and helping us whenever she could.

Our stay ( for two nights ) was so delightful that we re-arranged our itinerary so that we could return for one more night before we left France.

La Charterie is located 50 km. west of Evreux and was a perfect destination after arriving in Paris at noon. It is a wonderful location from which to set off on day trips to Honfleur, Etretat or the beaches to see the war memorials

Seeing that Marie- Hélène Francois is a good friend of the proprietor of Les Aubépines and there are not too many inns of this calibre in this region, I felt that you would probably be interested in knowing about La Charterie.

We would give this place a 10/10!
