Magellan's
Men's Travelite Microfiber Jacket MJ4802

photoI normally avoid rainwear in the summer, but when I cruised in the British Isles last August, I decided it would be a good idea to take a lightweight rain jacket along. I selected the Men's Travelite Microfiber Jacket from Magellan's because it was easy to pack, and it turned out to be an excellent choice--especially in the cool, damp maritime climate of coastal Scotland.

The Travelite jacket is made of a ripstop microfiber nylon that sheds water like a rubber duck. A mesh lining lets air circulate inside the jacket for greater comfort, and Velco-tabbed cuffs can be opened for additional ventilation. (I wore the jacket when the temperature was around 20° C or 68° F, and it didn't feel at all sticky.)

Two outside slash pockets have zippers and are big enough to keep your hands warm if you've forgotten your gloves; inside, you'll find a big zipped pocket and, on the left, an even deeper pocket that closes with Velcro. There's even a hidden (and large) zippered pocket on the back on the jacket under the shoulder yoke.

I wouldn't recommend this jacket (or any jacket) in really hot weather, when I'd just as soon carry an umbrella or get wet. But if you like nylon outerwear, or if (like me) you want an ultra-squishable rain jacket and windbreaker that you can pack and forget until you need it, Magellan's Travelite Microfiber Jacket is likely to be a worthwhile addition to your travel wardrobe.

Price: US $99. A women's version is also available for the same price.

Look and fit: Smooth and a bit shiny, close-fitting, a jacket rather than a parka. (If you're between sizes, go with the larger size.)

Ease of care: Toss in your washer and dryer, using low-temperature settings.

Special features: Under a Velcro flap behind the rolled collar, you'll find a generously cut hood with visor that offers excellent rain protection (even for wearers with glasses). And when the rain stops, the hood is easy to stow.

In a nutshell: An extremely lighweight, practical rain jacket and windbreaker that fits easily into a small suitcase or backpack.
