Tilley Endurables
Fast-Drying Tilley 'Travel' Socks, TA800

Tilley Travel Socks photoTilley brags that two pairs of these "UNHOLeY" socks are all you need to travel the world, and that's a reasonable claim. The socks dry in a few hours-- or less, if the humidity is low--so there's no need to stuff the contents of your sock drawer in your suitcase.

On a Mediterranean cruise in 2002, I took a khaki pair and a black pair: one for daytime, the other for dress-up. The socks were extremely comfortable, they didn't bunch up, and I didn't get any blisters even on days when I walked for hours in the summer heat of Greece, Italy, and Croatia. I've since bought another four pairs and used them without complaint on many other European trips.

The socks come with a three-year "All Holes Barred Guarantee"--which means that, for the cost of a decent meal, you could hike from Hungary to Hong Kong and never buy another pair of socks. (I've been wearing mine at home and on the road for nearly three years, and they've just begun showing signs of wear.)

The only downside is a tendency to get smelly now and then, as often happens with polypropylene clothing. A rinse with Atmosklear normally solves that problem.

Price: US $14, and worth every penny.

Look and fit: Mid-calf length in khaki, black, or navy. Four stretch sizes accommodate children, women, men, and Bigfoot.

Ease of care: Wash, rinse, wring, and wait until morning. If you're impatient, blast them with your hair dryer.

Special features: Three-year guarantee.

In a nutshell: The most comfortable, blister-resistant, quick-drying socks that I've worn in a lifetime of compulsive walking.

Order from: Tilley Endurables, which has U.S., Canadian, UK, and international sites. Phone 1-800-363-8737, except in the UK.
