AdventureCloth Classic Shorts
TU20
On
a port-intensive August
cruise from Athens to Rome, I gave Tilley's Tropical Weight Classic Shorts a
workout while exploring ruins and ports in the blistering summer heat of
mainland Greece. The shorts proved more convenient than the traditional cotton
shorts that I'd brought along, for several reasons:
-
They weren't as heavy, bulky, or prone to wrinkling.
-
The Velcro-sealed cargo pockets offered secure storage for my
wallet.
-
The deep side pockets were cut so that coins and other loose
items didn't fall out when I sat down.
-
The AdventureCloth poly/cotton fabric had the look and feel of
100% cotton, but it dried much
more quickly--and without wrinkling--when washed in the bathroom sink and hung
above the tub.
Unfortunately, the Tropical Weight shorts have been discontinued
since I field-tested them in the Mediterranean, but Tilley does offer a slightly
heavier "classic weight" AdventureCloth version with identical styling and
features. Bermuda-style
Long Shorts and pleated-front
City Shorts are also available.
Price: US $89 for the
Classic Shorts. That's a
lot more than you'd pay at Wal-Mart or the TrouserTown outlet store, but the shorts are well-made and should last for
years.
Look and fit: Cut close to
the body, with a
plain front. If you don't want to emphasize a beer belly, check Tilley's other styles.
Ease of care: Toss them in
your suitcase or backpack. When you're ready to wash them, anything goes except
bleach.
Special features: Cargo
pockets have buttons on the flaps, but they're actually sealed with Velcro. The
shorts also have a hidden passport-size security pocket, a D-ring on the
adjustable waistband, and "undetectable DoubleBum construction" for longer wear.
In a nutshell: A slim, trim,
sturdy pair of easy-care shorts for summer travel.
