Folding Suitcase
from Packing and Luggage Accessories

photo LEFT: Magellan's Fold N' Go Suitcase stays flat until you need it.

It's easy to return from a trip with more than you carried when you left home, even if you aren't a power shopper. In the past, I usually solved this problem by jamming my books, chocolate bars, blocks of Parmegiano Reggiano cheese, etc. into my suitcase and hoping the zipper wouldn't break. Nowadays, I carry Magellan's Fold N' Go Suitcase instead.

The Fold N' Go Suitcase is just what its name implies: a bag that folds flat until you need it, then converts into luggage when your main suitcase has reached the bursting point.

The transformation process is easy: Just unfold the bag, flip a pair of internal stiffeners into place, and press a few snaps. Voilà! You now have a sturdy, rigid-framed nylon suitcase that's perfect for checking your dirty clothes or carrying fragile items onto the plane. The bag even has exterior mesh pockets on both ends that can be used for small carry-on items.

Note: Magellan's Web site has a testimonial from a traveler who's used the bag to carry bottles of olive oil and wine home from Italy. I haven't used mine for that, but I have loaded it up with heavy press kits and travel literature, and the suitcase has survived the luggage-handling systems at half a dozen airports.

At US $19.85, the Fold N' Go Suitcase is a bargain--and it's especially useful at a time when airlines are charging more for overweight bags and airport security inspectors may be less than careful about repacking overstuffed suitcases.

TIP: Magellan's sells an Easy Spot Handle Wrap that my wife and I use with this suitcase. It's made of neon yellow, green, or pink nylon and has a luggage tag on the inside. When you wrap it around the Foldn N' Glo's handle and close it with the built-in Velcro strip, it makes the suitcase easier to recognize on airport luggage conveyors.
