At Spitsbergen Travel's trekking headquarters, we were equipped with
flotation suits, boots, fleece-lined hats, and heavy gloves. (Flotation suits,
a.k.a. "float suits,"
are waterproof nylon overalls with a layer of closed-cell foam inside.)
Note: The snowmobile in the photo above is used for winter day trips
and overnight expeditions. In Norway, a snowmobile is called a "scooter," a name
that can be confusing to a foreigner who may be expecting a glacier trek on a
Vespa.
