Porto PhotosFrom: Porto, Portugal
This view from the top deck of the Dom Luis I bridge shows Vila Nova de Gaia on the southern bank of the Douro River. The tile-roofed buildings are port lodges, where Porto wine is blended, aged, and bottled. (Cálem, which you can visit, is on the left.) The boats, called barcos rabelos, were once used to transport newly fermented wine from the Douro Valley. Today, tanker trucks perform that duty. The green strip of parkland along the riverfront has a tourist office where you can pick up a guide to the port lodges.
