Hilton Stockholm Slussen
The
Hilton Stockholm Slussen is on the northern edge of Södermalm,
near the locks that separate the Riddarfjärden arm of Lake Mälaren from the
Saltsjön (Stockholm's inlet from the Baltic Sea). The five-star hotel, which opened as the
Scandic in 1989, offers modern international-style accommodations with a distinctly
Swedish accent: It was designed by Gert Windgårdh, one of Sweden's most
prominent architects; it was the first hotel in Sweden to earn the Nordic
countries' Swan environmental
label; and it became Sweden's first Hilton hotel in 2002.
The 289 guest rooms and suites are decorated
with patterned wood paneling and Italian marble (see lower left photo above).
Smoking and non-smoking rooms are available; the hotel also has four
hypoallergenic rooms and four that are equipped for disabled guests. An
Executive Floor offers rooms with extra touches of luxury such as bathrobes,
slippers, tea and coffeemakers, and access to a private clubroom with
complimentary drinks and snacks. Most of the hotel's rooms have views of the
Ridderfjärden and the Old Town.
Public rooms
The Hilton Stockholm Slussen has two bars,
including one that has a live DJ on weekends and terrace seating during the
warmer months. The Eken Matsal restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, while
the Panorama Restaurant (see photo) serves a buffet breakfast. During my tour of
the hotel, I sampled an outstanding smorgåsbord-style buffet lunch; my fellow
diners ranged from Swedish businessmen to a casually dressed young mother with a
baby.
Location
The hotel is in the trendy pub, restaurant, and
shopping district of Södermalm. Gamla Stan, the old town, is directly across a
bridge; downtown Stockholm is within walking distance, and the main railway
station and Arlanda Express terminal are just two stops away from the Slussen
station of the Tunnelbana or subway.
