The Stockholm area has many youth hostels, but only a few are located in the city.

af Chapman & Skeppsholmen Youth Hostel

The af Chapman & Skeppsholmen Youth Hostel occupies a three-masted sailing ship that is permanently moored on Skeppsholmen, an island near the city center. The ship, which entered service as the Dunboyne in 1888, once carried passengers between Ireland and Australia. It was a Swedish Navy barracks ship during World War II and has been an STF youth hostel since 1949.

Please note:

  • Check in at the reception office on shore; see small photo above. To avoid paying a supplement, show your Hostelling International card.)

  • The link above will take you to a Swedish page for the youth hostel. To reach the English page, you'll need to click an "English" link and navigate your way to Stockholm on the STF hostel site.

  • The Chapman is undergoing renovation from September, 2005 onward; a few rooms will be available in the hostel's building on land during the period of renovations, and other STF hostels in the Stockholm area will remain open.

Other hostels in Stockholm

Den Röda Båten Mäleren is moored along the Riddarfjården on Södermalm, across the bridge from the Gamla Stan Tunnelbana (subway) station. Single and multi-person cabins are available on this 1914-vintage Göta Canal steamer.

Another old ship, Gustav af Klint, is both a hotel and a youth hostel. It's near the Slussen Tunnelbana stop on Södermalm.

City Backpackers is only 400 meters or a 10-minute walk from the central railroad station, making it convenient if you're staying only a night or two and prefer convenience to scenery or atmosphere.

In summer, a school in Östermalm becomes the SVIF Östra Reals Vandrarhem. The hostel's location is fairly convenient, but reviews have been mixed.

Another summer-only hostel is the Backpackers Inn, a converted school that--like other STF hostels--is affiliated with Hostelling International.

Finally, Långholmen (on the island of the same name) is a former prison from the 1840s that houses both a youth hostel and a hotel. It's well outside the center, but you can get into town easily by walking 10 minutes to the Hornstull Tunnelbana station.
