Veeraswamy Indian Restaurant
London

Menu

Veeraswamy's dinner menu offers a variety of starters, ranging from Tandoori macchli ke tikka (chunky cod pieces marinated in tumeric) to plates of assorted vegetarian or non-vegetarian appetizers. I tried the Afghani kebab, which consisted of spiced chicken grilled over charcoal in a clay oven. It was good, though not as spectacular as my tablemate's huge bowl of Mussels Moilee (fresh mussels in an aromatic coconut and ginger sauce), which looked like a meal in itself.

For the main course, I chose Sea Bass Pollichaddu, or seabass filets marinated in red kerala spices and panfried in a banana leaf. It may have been the best fish preparation that I've ever tasted. (Srinivas, our outstanding waiter, asked if I'd prefer to have the spices toned down, but I opted for maximum heat and lived to tell the tale.)

Some of the other intriguing main dishes were Malabar Lobster Curry, Lamb Xacutti ("slow-cooked in a west coast blend of twenty spices and coconut"), and Raan Baluchi ("shank of lamb marinated in a special blend of spices, kashmiri chilli, rose petals, baked in the tandoor"). Vegetarians could choose a Thali consisting of "khumb palak, okra do piazza, khattey aloo, dal, raita, naan, rice, [and] vegetable samosa." Suggestion: Be sure to request a side order of Naan (a tasty Indian bread), and consider ordering Dal ("3 types of lentils tempered with spices") or one of the other choices from the vegetables menu.
