Anger

The German word "Anger" means "common" or "village green." The long, tentacled plaza on the southeastern corner of Erfurt's historic center may have served that function at one time, but it was better known as a wholesale market for blue dye made from woad (a flowering plant that was fermented in men's urine, dried on rooftops, and ground into a powder).

Today, Anger is the leading downtown shopping area, with department stores and an indoor mall--including Karstadt, shown above, which is decorated with trees and lights during the Christmas season.
