Siena: Another view of the Duomo (Catedrale di Santa
Maria) and its campanile or bell tower. The arches on the right are from a 14th
Century plan to build a massive new cathedral, using the existing Duomo as the
transept. That project was abandoned due to structural problems and the Black
Death of 1348, which killed four-fifths of Siena's population. Today, visitors
to the adjacent Museo dell'Opera del Duomo can climb steps to the top of the
arches for a panoramic view of the city.
