Siena: A wide-angle view of the Piazza del Campo.The travertine marble stripes in the brickwork divide the fan-shaped plaza into nine wedges that represent i Signori Nove ("the Nine Lords"), a council drawn from the middle classes that ruled Siena from 1285 until Spanish and Florentine forces conquered the city in 1355.
