Siena: Workers install a new manhole at the corner
of the Via del Paglia and the
Via di Città. (Siena has a remarkable network of sewer and water passages
carved into the sandstone beneath its hilly streets; water was piped in via five
underground tunnels, one leading to the Piazza del Campo, during the Middle
Ages.)
