Siena: A closer view of public-utilities work at the
corner of the Via del Paglia and the Via di Città, not far from the Duomo and
the Piazza del Campo. Note the rectangular paving stones. These are crisscrossed
with hand-chiseled grooves for traction in wet weather: some in straight lines,
others at a diagonal, and some in a herringbone pattern. (I watched a
streetworker chiseling grooves in a paving stone and wondered if each artisan
carved his own preferred pattern.)
