News Clovelly Herring Festival is Sunday, 15 NovemberFestival takes place on scenic North Devon Coast
Maritime historian and writer Mike Smylie will be bringing his "Kipperland" exhibition to the festival, which tells the history of the herring. He will also be smoking delicious kippers and bloaters for sale in his smokehouse and demonstrating fishing skills and crafts. Live music, sea shanties and the Singing Fishwives will keep everyone entertained while they browse the local food and craft stalls, buy herring specialities at the quay kitchen and enjoy a glass of wine or Thatcher's Gold cider. There will also be photographic exhibition of Clovelly's fishing history, Red Herring prize competition in aid of the RNLI and fun activities to keep the children delighted too. Clovelly's fortunes were once dependant on the herring shoals; at the height of the season most villagers were involved in dealing with the catch and records show that in 1749 there were a hundred herring boats in the port. Today there are just two. Herring arrive in prime condition and are caught using small nets, which are only let down for a short period of time and the fishing is mostly close inshore, ensuring its sustainability and making little environmental impact on the sea or the sea bed. Admission is adults £5.75; children £3.65 (7-16 years); family (two adults and two children) £15.50 and under 7s free.
