London's Courtauld Institute of Art offers one-week summer courses in art history

Currently celebrating its 75th anniversary, the Courtauld Institute of Art is the foremost centre in Britain for the study of the history of art and has a renowned international reputation. It also houses a public gallery with works representing more than 600 years of artistic tradition.

The Institute is based in Somerset House, one of the grandest and most famous neo-classical buildings in the centre of London, and designed by Sir William Chambers in the late eighteenth century. The Institute’s rooms are rich in historical associations, being originally planned for the Royal Academy and the other Learned Societies.

From 14 July to 8 August 2008, the Courtauld hosts a series of one-week short courses aimed at covering in detail a specific genre or period in art, from the medieval to the contemporary.

The world-famous Courtauld collections range from the thirteenth century to the present. They include superb Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings by Manet, Monet, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Degas, Matisse, Seurat, works by Rubens and Gainsborough as well as celebrated Renaissance artists, prints and drawings by Michelangelo, Leonardo, Hogarth and Rembrandt and paintings and sculptures by twentieth-century artists such as Kandinsky and Rodin.
