Leicester is named "Curry Capital of Britain 2007"

photoLEICESTER, ENGLAND, UK -- For the first time in the competition’s history, Leicester has won the prestigious title of "Curry Capital of Britain 2007." Organised by Menu Magazine, the annual competition has been running for seven years and is contested by 16 major UK cities.

Seven restaurants were nominated to represent Leicester in this year’s bid, as voted for by readers of the Leicester Mercury newspaper: The Curry House on London Road, T and K Balti House on Green Lane Road, Ek Maya on Dysart Way, Kabalou’s on Loughborough Road, Curry Fever on Belgrave Road, the Spice House in Barwell, and Little India Restaurant in Arnesby.

After judging of the individual restaurants and in the final decision for the 2007 Curry Capital of Britain, four of the 16 cities - current holders Glasgow, Bradford, Manchester and Leicester - were declared equal with London East just one point behind. After further consideration, the winner of Curry Capital of Britain 2007 was declared to be Leicester whose innovative DVD organised by Leicester Shire Promotions and featuring team leader EK Maya, the Lord Mayor of Leicester, and founder of Curryslim, Tiny Deol, convinced the judges of the city’s growth and future plans.

Peter Grove, organiser and editor of Menu Magazine, commented: "Leicester was the judges unanimous decision from the four-way tie due to the clear understanding of the purposes of the event shown in the DVD. It was agreed that this year's title should go where it was felt it would do most good and that was Leicester."

Cllr Ross Willmott, Leader of Leicester City Council, said: "This accolade tells the nation something that we’ve all known for years: that Leicester is indeed Britain’s curry capital."

Kaycee Patel from Ek Maya added: "Curry and culture are ubiquitous to Leicester and to be finally crowned Curry Capital of Britain is a great achievement and much deserved recognition for Leicester and its people."
