Maglev trains and minigolf come to Munich Airport

by Durant Imboden

The latest issue of Munich Airport's newsetter, MUC Flyer, has several intriguing announcements:

The biggest news is the plan for a high-speed maglev rail link between Munich Airport and the city center. Magnetic-levitation trains will depart to and from the airport every 10 minutes, taking only 10 minutes to cover the distance between the airport and Munich's central railroad station.

While they're waiting for the transrapid rail link to be built, MUC passengers can enjoy a more leisurely pursuit: a new 18-hole miniature golf course at the airport visitors' park. In 2008, the course is open from March until October, on weekdays from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. annd on weekends or public holidays from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. (Kids up to 16 pay reduced rates.)

Coming in 2009: a new airport hotel

The Accor hotel group is building a family-friendly Novotel at MUC, with a direct link to the airport's train station and a free bus shuttle to the terminals. The hotel will have 250 rooms (all with sofas). Construction will begin early in 2008, and the hotel is scheduled to open in fall, 2009.
