Pembrokeshire Fish Week celebrates seafood in Wales

Ninth annual festival runs from June 21-29

Pembrokeshire Fish Week logoFrom Saturday 21 to Sunday 29 June, the beautiful West Wales county of Pembrokeshire enjoys a festival of everything fresh and fishy during Pembrokeshire Fish Week 2008. Now in its ninth year, the event celebrates the abundance of mouth-watering seafood in the county as well as its breathtaking coastline and many wonderful, sandy beaches.

There will be more than 150 events taking place all over the county including cookery demonstrations, seafood extravaganzas, fishing trips, watersports, competitions, exhibitions and talks about the history of the local fishing industry and conservation. A highlight will be a fish and shellfish masterclass on 26 June hosted at the Torch Theatre, Milford Haven by British restaurateur and fishmonger, Mitch Tonks, who has opened twelve FishWorks restaurants in the South East and is a regular on BBC’s Saturday Kitchen.

Pembrokeshire Fish Week will be opened on Saturday 21 June with a fun-filled open day at Milford Haven, the traditional home of the Pembrokeshire fishing industry. The Sea Fair Haven festival will also be taking place where visitors can go onboard a variety of tall ships and classic boats moored at Milford Docks.

New this year are a chowder trail in the south Pembrokeshire village of Saundersfoot; mini-hovercraft trips off the coast, sessions with TYF on learning how to fish from a kayak and an adventure watersports day including powerboating at Llys y Fran reservoir.

Food-lovers can combine a delicious supper of local fish with an evening river cruise; cook their own catch on a sea boat trip, go along to a fish tapas evening or enjoy a fresh mackerel barbecue. Family events range from crab-catching, snorkel safaris and beach sports to fun days at Milford Haven and Tenby, and sea-inspired art and craft workshops.

For anglers there will be the launch of Fish Week’s first major coarse fishing competition, the FBM Holidays Coarse Fishing Championships at Holgan Farm, while younger anglers can take part in informal junior competitions; there will also be various learn-to-fish days for a range of ages. And amateur photographers can enter the ‘Shoreline’ competition with prizes for children and adults.

Pembrokeshire Fish Week is funded by Pembrokeshire County Council, South West Wales Tourism and Milford Haven Port Authority.
