Have iPod, Will Travel
Playtripper.com makes it easy to download music and podcasts on the road
LONDON -- "I am SO bored of everything on my iPod!" is a common complaint
from travellers the world over. Playtripper.com think they have the solution: an
innovative MP3 service aimed squarely at the needs of the wanderlust generation.
A recent survey by TNT Magazine Travel Show 2008 revealed that
backpackers consider an iPod/MP3 player to be the most essential item to take on
their trip, beating even a toothbrush by nearly three votes to one. But most
travellers, especially those with iPods, find it difficult to add any new music
to their device, as they can no longer sync with the "master" collection on
their PC at home.
In a nutshell, Playtripper is like "iTunes for Travellers". It offers simple
drag-and-drop of MP3 files straight to your iPod, using a small program called
"Sherpa". It also has a very cool feature that finds travel podcasts relevant to
your trip. And if you just have to have that hot new album on your favourite
gadget, they are working with several online stores so that you can buy the
latest music and audiobooks while on the road. That makes Playtripper perfect
for backpackers, ski workers, au pairs, members of the armed forces...or anyone
else who wants to load up with something new while they are away from home.
Playtripper is specifically designed for the needs of travellers. To start
with, Sherpa installs onto your iPod itself, rather than the PC, so you only
have to download it once. That means you can use it from any PC with a USB port,
as you would find in just about any internet café in the world. Sherpa is also
designed to be small so that it leaves as much room as possible for more music
and podcasts. At only 2MB in size, it is roughly the size of just half a song!
Playtripper also have an extensive podcast directory, with hundreds of radio
shows from major broadcasters like the BBC, Triple J, Lonely Planet, and the New
York Times; and thousands more from independents the world over. Simply search
or browse the directory, then download episodes of your favourite shows with
Sherpa and take them with you--they are perfect for breaking up those long
flights and bus journeys! And if you still can't find that one particular show
you were after, there is even the facility to add missing podcasts to the
directory yourself.
But the most unique feature of Playtripper is the way it finds travel
podcasts for you. If you sign up as a user on the website, you can create a list
of the destinations on your route, and it will automatically find and recommend
podcasts related to those places. For example, if you add "London" to your list,
you might find anything from narrated museum guides and walking tours, to soccer
news or the latest set from a celebrity DJ. It's great fun just trying out
different locations and seeing what you get back--local news and sports,
underground music, language courses, comedy...and a few real surprises to boot!
And all these recommendations are available directly in Sherpa, so downloading
them just takes a couple of clicks.
