Quinta Nova de Nossa Senohora do Carmo Estate launches Portugal's first private walking trailsDouro Valley estate opens a free 17-km walking circuit with three routes The Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo Estate in Portugal's Douro Valley has opened the first private walking trails that are certified by the Portuguese Camping and Mountaineering Federation and the Fédération Européenne de la Randonée Pedestre. The estate, situated in the Upper Douro wine-growning region close to Pinhao, offers a 17-km (10.6-mile) walking circuit divided into three different routes unveiling its most historic and impressive spots scattered throughout the 120-hectare or nearly 300-acre property. Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo Estate stretches along a 1.5 km of the north bank of the Douro River, where its terraced vineyards are part of a breathtaking, historically-protected landscape. The walking trail offers visitors the possibility of knowing in detail the history and the usages of a wine-growing farm as well as a number of other outdoor activities, such as outdoor walks, winecaching (thematic approaches to geocaching), mountain bike rides, Nordic walking and birdwatching in addition to the tempting possibility of picnicking in one of the many lovely spots in Quinta Nova Estate. With different difficulty levels, these three trails take the visitor through the Estate’s wine cellar, the two chapels, tree-lined paths, and the Estate’s three orchards, viz.: the Roman Orchard, the African Orchard and the Orange Tree Orchard. The walk is free and offers ramblers different natural outdoor activities all the year round. Visitors are requested only to contact the front desk at the Wine Hotel of Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo Estate from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in order to obtain information and a map as well as the appropriate safety rules. In addition to the walking trail, the visitor may also discover a a superb wine hotel [See Europe for Visitors article] and various leisure opportunities, a typical regional cuisine restaurant offering estate bottled and labeled wines, contributing thus to a sustainable development of tourism in the Upper Douro wine-growing region.
