Boeing 747

ABOVE: When was the last time you saw a youth hostel that looked like this?

A Boeing 747 hostel and other news from Stockholm

Stay overnight in a jumbo jet

The latest in hotel design has landed in Stockholm in the form of a converted Boeing 747. The jumbo jet will serve as a youth hostel and is set to open in May in Uppsala. Businessman Oscar Diös has been given permission by airport owner LFV and the Swedish National Roads Administration to operate the hostel. The plane will be located close to Arlanda Airport on road 273.

Other unusual places to stay in Stockholm include the fully rigged ship af Chapman and the old prison on Långholmen.

Cruise terminal to open by new Abba Museum

Stockholm's new large cruise terminal, at Frihamen 638, is set to open in May, but a smaller terminal also will be joining the Ports of Stockholm facilities. The terminal at Stadsgården is set to accommodate cruise ships with up to 1,000 passengers and will be located by the new ABBA Museum, set to open in 2009.

New sky bar offers stunning views

Set atop a refurbished 1961 building, the new sky bar, named Och Himlen Därtill (And Heaven Too), offers a unique perspective as visitors sip their drinks. Named after the 1940s film "All This and Heaven Too," staring Bette Davis and Charles Boyer, it is completely surrounded by glass, treating visitors to a 360-degree view of Stockholm. The building, originally used by the Swedish Tax Agency, also houses the Imperiet restaurant, a department store called Skrapan, and office and apartment space. Och Himlen Därtill is located at Götgatan 76.

Thielska gallery back in business

The Thielska Gallery has reopened after its October closing due to a water leak. Newly on display to the public are works by renowned Swedish painter Richard Berg. Among the display are Berg's correspondence, notes, sketches and photographs. The Thielska Gallery is situated at the far end of Djurgården on Blockhusudden and boasts a unique collection of turn of the century Nordic art.

New Rock Festivals in Stockholm

Two new music festivals will hit Stockholm this summer, Where the Action Is and Acceleratorfestivalen. They will take place at Stora Skuggan University in Eco Park on June 14 and June 25, respectively. The lineup includes indie, pop and rock acts such as Foo Fighters, Hellacopters, The Hives, Mando Diao and Sahara Hotnights. Tickets can be purchased via Ticnet.

Luxury suites at Globe Hotel

Located next to the Globe Arena, Stockholm's largest event venue, Quality Hotel Globe has just added three luxury suites on the top floor of the hotel. The new suites -- the largest at 120 square meters -- feature their own relaxation and spa area. An additional spa area and a large banquet hall for up to 300 people also have been added. The hotel recently added 40 new rooms with an Antarctica theme designed by well-known Swedish White architects.

Nordic Light Hotel introduces ambient bar

Every Wednesday Stockholm's designer hotel, the Nordic Light Hotel, will host fLiM Stockholm. Described as the capital's only ambient bar, resident DJ kliin will present a number of guest DJs and video artists this spring. The idea is to create a permanent meeting place for people to go out, have a cocktail, sample good food among friends and enjoy soft, ambient electronic music.
