This article from RickSteves.com is light on practical advice, but it does contain a few useful tips and book recommendations.

Bicycles on Trains and Ferries in Europe
Sean Cleary's article is a few years old, but it's worth reading for his first-hand account of train travel with a bicycle in France, Britain, and Spain.

The Mountain Site
Click on a country's flag, then select a profile or a photo from the list of alpine routes. (The profiles are graphs that show elevations and gradients.)

ECF European Cyclists' Federation
This site is geared toward Europeans, but bicycling advocates in other countries may enjoy reading the position papers, conference reports, etc.

File of the Slopes of Europe
Click the flags or use the search window to find information on elevation, gradient, difficulty, etc. for bicycle routes in 27 European countries.
