I normally don't offer hotel recommendations, for several reasons:

• I'm not paid to examine hotel rooms, and it isn't economic for me to spend my travel time emulating a Michelin inspector or an author of hotel guidebooks like Karen Brown.

• My role isn't to tell you where to stay; instead, it's to provide general information and links to a variety of Web resources to help you make your own travel-planning decisions.

• When I travel in Europe, I don't always stay in hotels. (I often linger in each city or town, renting a vacation apartment or cottage instead of a hotel room.)

Still, every rule deserves an exception, and in this article I'll tell you about two mid-priced hotels that I visited during recent stopovers in Florence on my way to and from a language school in Siena, Italy.
