Florence has scores of hotels, hostels, and other places to stay, and I haven't attempted to list all of them here. In the 2- to 5-star categories, I've linked primarily to hotels represented by our booking partners for Italy, Venere and HotelsItaly.com, whose rates are typically lower than the hotels' standard "rack rates."

Tip: Many Florence hotels are within walking distance of the Santa Maria Novella railroad station. Given a choice, I'd opt for a hotel away from the station square, since it has more traffic than charm. Still, if you're staying only a day or two and have an early departure, being close to the station can be convenient--and the area isn't dangerous; it just seems out of place in the city of Medici architecture and Michelangelo's David.
