A sign advertises the Historischer Schäfertanz,
or Historical Shepherds' Dance, which takes place several times a year in
Rothenburg. The tradition dates back to the Middle Ages, when the Brotherhood of
Shepherds Guild received permission for an annual "Shepherds' Day" celebration
in the city center. Modern reenactments in historic costume began in 1911. (For
