How to Get a U.S. Passport Quickly

Obtaining a U.S. passport can take a month or longer, especially in spring and summer, and the Passport Agency recommends allowing six weeks for a new or renewed passport . But in a pinch, you can get yours in about two weeks--or even in 24 hours.

Here's how:

  1. Complete the U.S. passport application. (See linked article under "Related Features" below.)
  2. Obtain the required photos and supporting documents.
  3. File the application at a Passport Agency office, courthouse, Post Office, or other authorized location. (Renewals can be handled by mail.)
  4. Pay a $35 expedite fee in addition to the nomal passport fee.
  5. If you're submitting a renewal application by mail, mark "EXPEDITED" in large letters on the envelope.
  6. For quickest service, pay for overnight mail service (Express Mail) both ways.
  7. Allow 3 working days for processing from the time the application reaches the Passport Agency, plus mailing time, for a total of 7-10 days.

For even faster service:

  1. If you can't wait 7-10 days, use our passport expediter. These specialists can get you a U.S. passport in one day, plus the time it takes for overnight courier service if you live out of town. You can also get travel visas expedited at the same time or separately.
