All rooms are air-conditioned, breakfast is served in an historic vaulted cellar, and the lobby has comfortable seating with a small library and bar.

The hotel's style blends the traditional with the modern. In addition to standard single, double, twin, and triple rooms, the hotel has connecting doubles and a family room with beds for five adults.

Hotel La Lanterne pool photo

Hotel La Lanterne ****

Hotel La Lanterne photoThe Hotel La Lanterne is a rarity in Paris: It has an indoor swimming pool (with hammam) on the premises. And what a pool it is, with its vaulted stone ceiling and massage jets.

Other amenities at La Lanterne include a bar and a small garden.

Some of the 27 rooms are connecting, making the hotel convenient for families. A handful of "privilege" double and twin rooms have terraces.

Hotel Le Lapin Blanc photo

Hotel Le Petit Paris photo

Hotel Le Petit Paris ****

The "Little Paris" is on the rue Saint Jacques, within an easy walk of the Luxembourg RER stop (which offers direct service to CDG Airport on the RER's "B" line). The Jardin du Luxembourg, Sorbonne, and Panthéon are all close by.

Hotel Les Dames du Pantheon photo

Hotel Les Dames du Panthéon ****

Misogynists, beware: "The Women of the Pantheon" celebrates the spirit of great women in French history, with 35 rooms that honor such notable females as Edith Piaf, George Sand, Les Cocottes, and the Signares (mixed-race women who gained economic status and power in French Senegal during the 18th and 19th Centuries).

The Hotel Les Dames du Panthéon lies directly on the Place du Panthéon, a few blocks east of the Luxembourg RER station (with trains to CDG and Orly Airports). Several Métro lines are within walking distance.

Hotel Les Rives de Notre-Dame photo

Hotel Les Rives des Notre-Dame ****

Hotel Les Rives des Notre-Dame inset photoThis is a tiny hotel (only 10 rooms) in a location that couldn't be more desirable: It's directly on the Quai Saint-Michel, facing the Seine and the Île de la Cité.

Standard doubles have queen-size beds, and superior doubles come with king-sized beds and sitting areas. For a splurge, book the penthouse suite on the top floor, which has vaulted ceilings, a panoramic view of Paris, and a living room.

Mercure Paris Notre Dame Saint Germain des Pres hotel photo

Hotel Mercure Paris Notre Dame Saint Germain des Prés ****

Mercure is a popular midscale hotel group with European business and leisure travelers. The Mercure Paris Notre Dame Saint Germain des Prés is a good example of its type, with contemporary-style double and twin rooms, a bar, and a choice of two optional breakfasts: buffet or continental.

The hotel is on the Rue du Sommerard, about a block from one of our favorite Paris museums: the Musée de Cluny - Musée National du Moyen Age. (The museum's medieval garden, which doesn't require a ticket, is a great place to relax between sightseeing excursions.)

Note: All rooms have coffee- and tea-making facilities, and "Privilege Rooms" come with Nespresso machines.

The pet-friendly Hotel Monge has 30 double, twin, and triple rooms. It's located west of the Jardin des Plantes near the Place Monge Métro station.

The Select Hotel Rive Gauche is extremely popular with guests, thanks in part to its location: The hotel is located right next to the main buildings of the Sorbonne, only a few blocks from two RER stations that offer rail access to CDG Airport, Orly Airport, the Eiffel Tower, and Versaille.

The Villa Pantheon has a British theme, with leather armchairs, plenty of woodwork, and a fondness for mature gentlemen with well-cut suits and moustaches (see photo above).

In addition to welcoming Caledonophiles with a "So Scottish" bar, the hotel imports the look of Scotland into its room decor. (If you can't wangle an invitation to Balmoral, book a room at the Hotel Villa Pantheon instead.)

Hotel des Arenes photo

Hotel des Arènes ***

Some of the rooms at this hotel on the Rue Monge overlook the Arènes de Lutèce, a Roman amphitheatre in the middle of the 5th arrondissement.

The hotel itself is a classic Parisian building with 52 air-conditioned singles, doubles, twins, and triples. (The Hotel des Arènes is unusually baby- and toddler-friendly; guests can borrow baby baths, diaper-changing pads, and strollers from reception.)

Two underground stations nearby--Jussieu and Cardinal Lemoine--provide access to Métro lines 4 and 7.

Hotel Design Sorbonne photo

Hotel Design Sorbonne ***

"Style" is the watchword at this hotel just east of the Jardin du Luxembourg and next door to the Universié Paris-Sorbonne. The decor is modern without being austere, and it's thoroughly French. (You won't wake up thinking you're in Stockholm or Helsinki.)

Hotel Elysa Luxembourg photo

As the name suggests, this small hotel is located on the Rue Mouffetard, one of the oldest streets in Paris. Its 42 rooms are built around a quiet courtyard, and they range from singles to spacious "executive rooms" on the top floor beneath the roof.

The nearest Métro station is Place Monge on Line 7, which offers convenient transportation to the Louvre and other sights on the Right Bank.

Note: The hotel isn't air-conditioned, so the rooms on the top floor could heat up uncomfortably on sunny midsummer days.
