Paris: La Grande Arche de La Défense was designed by Otto von Spreckelsen and completed in 1989.

La Défense is a modern business district on the outskirts of Paris with some 150,000 corporate employees, 20,000 residents, a huge shopping mall, and the world's largest public-transportation center. It's worth a visit, if only to catch a glimpse of the modern France that you don't see on tourist postcards.
