Paris: The Winged Victory of Samathrace occupies a place of honor above  the staircase leading to Louvre Museum's upstairs galleries. The statue was reassembled from 118 separate pieces by museum staff after being discovered by a French consul and amateur archaelogist in 1863. (See article at Eleganza.com.)
