Paris: The stone column in the Place Vendôme is wrapped in a bronze spiral made from cannons that were captured at the Battle of Austerlitz, a.k.a. "The Battle of the Three Emperors," in 1805. Led by Napoleon Bonaparte (who celebrated his first anniversary as emperor on the day of the battle), the French routed the Austrians and Russians and captured some 1,200 cannons at the expense of 18,000 soldiers' lives.
