Austrian Hotels for North Americans

Austrian hotels for North Americans

ABOVE: What, no ice water with your hotel meals? ANTO has a solution.

Fifty years ago, it wasn't unusual for Americans and Canadians to travel with jars of Nescafé in their suitcases so they wouldn't have to drink strong European coffee. Those days are gone--or are they? Maybe not, to judge from a press release issued by the Austrian National Tourist Office in New York.

The press release begins reasonably enough:

Sometimes, a visit to a foreign country turns out to be full of surprises--and not all of them pleasant. It is frustrating to address the concierge in English, only to be met with a blank stare and a polite--but unhelpful--Wie bitte? (I beg your pardon?) Or, upon check-out, when one has little time to spare, to be confronted by a cool demand for: "Cash only!"

However, it's hard to have much sympathy for the tourist who can't live without ice water (an uncommon amenity in Europe) or who won't make the effort to decipher a German-language menu in a country where Deutsch is the native tongue.

Still, if you're among the North American travelers who expect a foreign hotel to be as un-foreign as possible, you'll be relieved to know that Austrian National Tourist Office in New York has come to your rescue. ANTO's Austrian Hotels for North Americans brochure lists "only those hotels that go the extra mile to please their English-speaking visitors." To qualify, all hotels must meet the criteria listed on page 2.
