Salzburg: Easter Festival (April 7 – 16, 2001)

According to one reviewer, Giuseppe Verdi must have had Bryn Terfel in mind when he wrote his “Falstaff” – for several years now, this magnificent Welsh baritone has delighted audiences all over the world as Shakespeare’s plump knight. At Salzburg’s Easter Festival, Terfel makes his first Austrian appearance in this new production of Falstaff in conjunction with the Salzburg Summer Festival. The Easter Festival’s mentor, Claudio Abbado, will conduct the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

At this festival, the Berlin Philharmonic will perform a number of other concerts under the batons of Abbado and Zubin Mehta, with pianist Maurizio Pollini as the soloist. A matinee performance of the orchestra (note: matinees in Austria are in the morning, rather than the afternoon!) is to be conducted by Mariss Jansons.

For ticket information, please contact the Salzburg Easter Festival Ticket Office, Herbert-v.-Karajan-Platz 9, A-5020 Salzburg, tel. 011-43-662-8045 361, fax: 011-43-662-8045 790.

Vienna: The Sound of Easter (April 7 – 16, 2001)

Since the beginning of the OsterKlang Festival, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has traditionally performed at its opening concert. This year, Johann Sebastian Bach’s The Passion of St. John, will be conducted by Trevor Pinnock, with Barbara Bonney among the soloists. The chorus and orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater of St. Petersburg, under the leadership of Valery Gergyev, performs Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps, as well as Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2. The Kremerata Musica, under Gidon Kremer, will perform Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Our Savior on the Cross at Vienna’s Minoritenkirche.

The program at the Vienna State Opera during the Sound of Easter includes Richard Wagner’s Parsifal, sung by American tenor Thomas Moser, who also performs in Hans Pfitzner’s Palestrina during the festival.

For more information and bookings, please contact OsterKlang Ticket Office, Stadiongasse 9, A-1010 Vienna, tel. 011-43-1-427 17, fax: 011-43-1-4000-99-8410 e-mail: tickets@osterklang.at. or visit the Web site at www.osterklang.at

Innsbruck: Easter Festival – Music of the Religions (April 8 – 15, 2001)

The topic of this year's Easter Festival in Innsbruck will be "A New Life - a Better America." During the week preceding Easter, the Festival will present, at different location in Innsbruck and Hall, a new musical look at what is considered "the country of unlimited hopes." New music, specially commissioned for Innsbruck's Easter Festival, inlcudes a St. Luke's Passion by the Tyrolean composer Norbert Zehm. The Thursday before Easter (in Austria, known as "Green Thursday") will be celebrated by Carl Stone with his "Californian Dream Music."

Undoubtedly, one of the highlights of the festival is the first guest appearance of Philippe Herreweghe. The renowned musician, together with the Collegium Vocale Ghent, will perform Musikalische Exequien by Heinrich Schütz and a Mass by Igor Stravinsky which he composed in the United States, performed by the brass ensemble of the Ensemble Modern.
