In 2001, the Festival is in the capable hands of the Musikverein, which also serves as the home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra also take part in the Festival, performing - among other appearances – a concert under the baton of Zubin Mehta, and another one with violin soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter.

The Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra , conducted by Mariss Jansons, perform. Among the many recitals, those by alto Marjana Lipovsek, mezzo-soprano Grace Bumbry, and the concert-master of the Vienna Philharmonic, violinist Werner Hink, deserve mention.

In addition, there will be a number of chamber music concerts, among them, an appearance by the Philharmonia Schrammeln, who will perform music by Joseph Lanner and the Strauss family.

Danube Festival (June 8 – July 1, 2001)

The Danube – one of the most celebrated rivers in the world – has not only given this festival its name it also serves as continuing inspiration for the many cultural events that take place on its banks. At the same time, the Danube could be considered a navigator on many an artistic expedition.

At the center of the Lower Austrian Danube Festival, which, since its inception in 1988, has developed into an important cultural event in Austria, is the medieval city of Krems in the Wachau Valley, which has rightly been called “the crown jewel of the Austrian landscape." The focus of the festival has been and continues to be contemporary avant-garde music.

Passion Plays - St. Margarethen (June 17 – September 9, 2001)

The Passion Plays of St. Margarethen were founded 75 years ago – they were first performed by young people of the parish in a neighborhood farmhouse; since 1961, the Passion Plays place every year at the site of the famous sandstone quarry of St. Margarethen, located about 30 miles from Vienna. The story line is based upon selected scenes taken from the New Testament, such as “The Sermon on the Mount,” “The Confrontation with the Pharisees,” "The Last Supper,” "Jesus and Pilate,” "The way of the Cross," and “Crucifixion.”

There are several performances in June, July, August and September - as there is a great demand for tickets, it is suggested that you order your tickets as early as possible.

For more detailed information and tickets, please contact the Passionsspielbüro, Kirchengasse 22, A-7062 St. Margarethen, tel. 011-43-2680-2100, fax: 011-43-2680-2100-4 e-mail: info@passio.at, website: www.passio.at

Graz: styriarte 2001 (June 22 – July 29, 2001)

In 2001, the styriarte festival takes place, once again under the leadership of internationally renowned conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt, who has returned to his native Graz every summer since 1985. This year, Harnoncourt pays homage to the 100th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi’s death, by performing Verdi's Messa da Requiem at lovely and historic Stephaniensaal. In another concert, famed soprano Cecilia Bartoli will perform with the Concentus Musicus Vienna, also under the baton of Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

This year’s festival has adopted the theme of Thomas More’s Utopia - taking up the concept of a better life in a more peaceful world, a theme that is as old as society itself. The styriarte 2001 outlines the eternal dream of a better world in all its facets through the history of music, its bright as well as its dark sides.
