"AUSTRIAN MUSIC FESTIVALS" Page 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Archived article from 2001

Vorarlberg: Schubertiade 2001 (June, August and September 2001)

More than 50 concerts will take place at the world’s foremost Schubert festival, from June 13 to 25, 2001, and August 29 through September 9, 2001. The venues include Schloss Achberg, Schwarzenberg in Bregenzerwald (including performances in the newly renovated Angelika Kauffmann-Saal and in Feldkirch). As always, lieder recitals dominate: Cecilia Bartoli, Barbara Bonney, Angelika Kirchschlager, Felicity Lott, Ann Murray, Violeta Urmana, Ian Bostridge, Matthias Goerne, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Christoph Prégardien, Thomas Quasthoff and Michael Schade are but a few of the participants. Chamber music evenings include pianist Alfred Brendel, the Alban Berg Quartet, the Wiener Streichsextett and violinist Benjamin Schmid.

Once again, special Master Classes will be conducted, this year by two prestigious Schubert interpreters: Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.

For more detailed information and tickets, please contact Schubertiade, Villa Rosenthal, Schweizer Strasse 1, A-6845 Hohenems, tel. 011-43-5576-72 091, fax: 011-43-5576-75 450 e-mail: info@schubertiade.at, website: www.schubertiade.at

Graz: styriarte 2001 (June 22 – July 29, 2001)

In 2001, the styriarte festival takes place, once again under the leadership of internationally renowned conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt, who has returned to his native Graz every summer since 1985. This year, Harnoncourt pays homage to the 100th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi’s death, by performing Verdi's Messa da Requiem at lovely and historic Stephaniensaal. In another concert, famed soprano Cecilia Bartoli will perform with the Concentus Musicus Vienna, also under the baton of Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

This year’s festival has adopted the theme of Thomas More’s Utopia - taking up the concept of a better life in a more peaceful world, a theme that is as old as society itself. The styriarte 2001 outlines the eternal dream of a better world in all its facets through the history of music, its bright as well as its dark sides.

For more information and tickets, please contact styriarte ticket office, Palais Attems, Sackstrasse 17, A-8010 Graz, tel. 011-43-316-825 000, fax: 011-43-316 877 3836 e-mail: styriarte@styria.com, website: www.styriarte.com

Baden Operetta Festival (June 23 – September 9, 2001)

The imperial family often took advantage of the healing waters of this serene spa resort, a mere 30 miles south of Vienna (by the way, Beethoven wrote his Ninth Symphony in Baden). Music, also known as a great healer, reigns supreme during the Baden Operetta Festival in this lovely Biedermeier town. In 2001, three favorites alternate throughout the summer: Die Rose von Stambul (The Rose of Stamboul) by Leo Fall, Der Vogelhändler (The Bird Seller) by Carl Zeller, and Zwei Herzen im Dreivierteltakt (Two Hearts in Three-Quarter-Time) by Robert Stolz.

For more detailed information and tickets, please contact the Stadttheater Baden Theaterplatz 7, A-2500 Baden, tel. 02252/485 47, fax: 02252/483 38-50 e-mail: stadttheater@baden-bei-wien.at.
